Course Description
The purpose of the Gifted and Talented Math Program is to provide the students with a broad base of experiences from which to select future alternatives. The 8th grade math classes will work toward giving the students opportunities for interacting, exploring ideas, and expressing themselves as learners and producers.
This course will emphasize skills necessary for problem-solving and continued growth in mathematics. Students will apply concepts, communicate, reason, create models and make connections in the following areas:
· Number and Operations
· Algebraic and Function Relationships
· Geometric and Spatial Relationships
· Data Analysis
Students enrolled in the Common Core Math 1 class will also take the Math 1 state test at the end of the year.
Expectations
· All students are expected to come to class daily. In the event of absence, it is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to make up any missed notes/ class work/ homework/ quizzes/ tests.
· Students are expected to complete all assignments to be successful in any class. Late assignments and assignments not handed in will be graded based on the late work policy, which will lower the student’s overall grade.
Homework
Students will be required to complete homework outside of class. Homework this year will be a combination of skill review, tasks, challenge problems, and journaling. Homework is not meant to be busy work, but needed practice outside of class. Students must show how they worked out their problems on homework and class work. A single answer without the work or explanation on how to obtain the answer will not be graded.
Materials Needed
● 3-ring binder with paper
● Composition notebook
● pencils with erasers and a pencil sharpener
● calculator for home use
Course Standard/Rules
● Be on time - students should be ready to learn when class begins
● Be respectful - show good manners and good judgement to everyone
● Be prepared - students must have binders, pencil and assignments each day
● Be called upon to speak – students should only be speaking at appropriate times
Classroom Procedures
● Sharpen pencils before class begins
● Remain quiet while moving around the room and in hallway
● Throw all trash away at the end of the class
● Grooming should be done in bathrooms
● Leave textbooks in the classroom
● Work in pencils and put name on all submitted work
● Sit in assigned seats with no heads on desks
● Upon entering the classroom, students will have 3 minutes to complete the flashback assignment .
Student Conduct & Discipline
Ligon GT Magnet Middle School have standards that must be followed for the orderly and efficient conduct of the school day. It is the responsibility of each student to be knowledgeable about the rules of the school as well as specific classroom procedures in order for learning to occur. General information on student conduct and discipline is contained in the student handbook, which is provided to all students.
Academic Integrity
Ligon GT Magnet Middle School expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty. Because the value of an academic curriculum depends upon the absolute integrity of the work done by the student, it is imperative that a student demonstrates a high standard of individual honor in his or her work.
